Weekly Wrap-Up, January 02, 2015

First off, all of us at EveryoneOn want to wish you all a very happy new year! In an unusual move, Google weighed in on the net neutrality discussion this week. As followers of the net neutrality debate know, supporters (President Obama included) are urging the FCC to reclassify ISPs as common carriers under Title II. Google noted, however, that were this reclassification to happen, that would mean that Google Fiber would have access to utility poles & other utility infrastructure, which would work to promote competition in the broadband industry. (You can read Google's comments filed to the FCC here.)

Kim Keenan, president & CEO of Minority Media & Telecommunications Councilargues that Section 706 is actually a better option than Title II reclassification, as it would not only promote net neutrality but also net equality.

Tom Freedman, Alan Davidson, & Alexander Hart comment on the voter consensus that cuts across party lines that a free & open Internet is important to our economic future.

In GOOD, Mark Hay discusses the issue of the Internet as a human right.

And finally, in the New Yorker, Vauhini Vara explores four charts that define 2014. Number one? Far more people got online. Let's hope this trend continues in 2015. If you want to be involved in our efforts to accelerate Internet adoption in the United States, be sure to look into how you can get involved.
