As Google Fiber plans its expansion, competitors are responding. As Jon Brodkin reports in Ars Technica, after Google Fiber announced its plans to enter the Charlotte, NC market, Time Warner Cable increased its customers’ Internet speeds at no extra cost.
U.S. trade group USTelecom has filed a petition challenging the FCC’s net neutrality order. USTelecom’s members include companies like CenturyLink, Verizon, and AT&T. According to USTelecom President Walter McCormick, the decision “reverses decades of established legal precedent.”
This week, many Indian companies began withdrawing from the Internet.org initiative in an effort to protect net neutrality. In response, Mark Zuckerberg has been defending the project. He has argued that net neutrality is compatible with Internet.org, but also argues that “if someone can’t afford to pay for connectivity, it is always better to have some access than none at all.”
And finally, today the FCC voted to allow spectrum sharing on the 3.5 GHz band.
